IWC and Mercedes AMG have one of modern watchmaking’s best-known partnerships. Since coming together in 2004, the team has produced some tremendous watches, but it’s this Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “AMG” that’s going to get IWC fan’s piston-driven hearts racing.
It’s the first 43mm Pilot‘s Watch Chronograph to use the in-house column-wheel 69385 caliber, and that’s not even the most exciting bit. It’s also the first case for the Pilot’s Chronograph that’s made from titanium.
Additionally, the dial is crafted from carbon fiber. If that sounds a lot like the material make-up of an F1 car, that’s because titanium and carbon fiber are used in almost every racing component at this level of motorsport. The same materials that are used in a “halo” safety cage replicas relojes, a T-shaped band of titanium wrapped in carbon fiber that saved F1 driver Grosjean’s life last year, can be found in this watch.
It’s difficult to visually translate the ethos or soul of a car, an airplane, or any other machine onto a watch. The design can end up being too on the nose, with logos plastered on the dial or gimmicky design cues that feel forced.

This 50-piece limited edition features a carbon fiber dial and a 44.5mm case, but not in titanium. Instead, it’s ceramic. The green accent color is Petronas Emerald.

James went hands on with this model in 2017 and found the same restraint in IWC’s design decisions that I see in the 2021 Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “AMG,” saying that “Automotive-themed watch designs walk a very fine line, and it’s common to see the automotive aspect conflict with the normal goals of a legible watch design. Materials matter. Carbon fiber is stronger than steel and 70% lighter. Besides playing an instrumental role in F1 cars, it’s used in modern aviation (the Boeing 787 Dreamliner airframe is made of 50% carbon fiber), bicycles, robotics, and drones. While it’s incredibly useful in manufacturing it also has a certain cache; it signals tech-forward design. Just look at the carbon fiber packages available on the Mercedes-AMG GT R and you’ll quickly see how attractive it can be.
It serves no purpose on the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “AMG” other than looking sleek and sexy, but boy does it ever. Carbon-fiber dials had a moment in the mid-2000s, but IWC was in a very different place back then. Concept-wise and aesthetically, there’s something that screams 2005 about this watch (in a good way, the specific pattern of the dials’ weave is reminiscent of the good parts of the era), but execution-wise it’s very 2021 at a pleasant 43mm large and 15mm tall. As it’s titanium, it will wear light on the wrist, and that just gives you more room for a heavy foot.
